Still flush with victory following his stunning biopic Oppenheimer, audiences are dazzled to learn that the famous director intends to dip his toes back into the fantastical. Teaming up with Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan has confirmed the title and plot of his next project, The Odyssey.

Titled after the famous Greek epic of the same name, The Odyssey follows the mythical journey of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, as he attempts to return home after the Trojan War, only to find his trip waylaid and delayed for years at the hands of monsters, gods, and disasters. With his wife and sons faithfully waiting for his return, the king must battle powers beyond his wildest imagination to finally find his peace.

Given the scope of the epic, and given that it spans well over a decade in the story, it's still up in the air as to which pieces Nolan intends to focus on or the length. Nolan is well-known for creating stories that showcase incredible emotional depth and conflict beyond spectacular visuals, so balancing the fraught despair and longing of Odysseus and his crew with the terrifying and beautiful creatures described in lore will be an interesting challenge.

Nolan's project is hardly the first attempt to bring the ancient tale to life. Ulysses, released in 1954 and starring the late Spartacus star Kirk Douglas, did the same. The Return, released in late 2024 by Italian director Uberto Pasolini, was yet another.

Nolan seems intent, however, on blowing previous attempts out of the water. The Odyssey is said to have a whopping $250 million budget attached to it. For context, Nolan's much beloved The Dark Knight had a budget of $185 million, and Oppenheimer had an impressively paltry $100 million, with a resulting $1 billion and $957 million profit earned, respectively.

Said budget is also a reflection of its rumored A-list cast, with the likes of Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Charlize Theron said to be involved.

Filming is scheduled to begin in early 2025, with a confident release date of July 17, 2026.
