'Godzilla Vs. Gigan Rex' Will Make Its Debut At Godzilla Festival 2022 Later This Year
Pushed back to 2022 after first being slated for a 2021 release, the studio-backed sequel to 2019's fan-directed G Vs. G has been assigned a debut date by Toho Productions. Pairing it with a long-awaited trailer, Toho has announced that Godzilla Vs. Gigan Rex will finally debut at Godzilla Festival 2022 this November, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the 1972 release of Toho's original Godzilla Vs. Gigan.
The original CGI short became one of the six prize-winners of the Gemstone Godzilla Contest in 2019 after being uploaded to the collaborative project's YouTube channel in March of that year. Toho Productions, as part of his winnings, gave the director a chance to create an expanded version of his winning short, and Takuya Uenishi's second incarnation of Gigan looks to be worth the wait. Outside of the comedic puppet series Godziban, the alien cyborg kaiju has not been incarnated on-screen since the “millennium” era of Godzilla, in 2004's Godzilla Final Wars, directed by action filmmaker Ryuhei Kitamura.
