A burst of fresh, cool air came through this hot summer day as George R. R. Martin assured fans of A Song of Ice and Fire that he is indeed continuing to work on The Winds of Winter. This statement seems to be made to assuage the fans of the book series who have expressed their dismay at how much time Martin has spent on other television projects. It has just recently been disclosed that Martin is working to greenlight a sequel to Game of Thrones titled Snow, which will feature star Kit Harington. House of the Dragon, a prequel set 200 years before the action of Game of Thrones is set to drop in August this year. There is another Game of Thrones prequel in the works as well, including the adventures of Ser Duncan and Aegon Targaryan in Dunk and Egg. Martin also made it clear to fans of the books who were not pleased with HBO’s ending of Game of Thrones that his version of the story will follow its own path and not be the same as the series.

On his personal blog, Not A Blog, Martin compares writing The Winds of Winter to gardening in “a winter garden.”  He explains:

“What I have noticed more and more of late, however, is my gardening is taking me further and further away from the television series. Yes, some of the things you saw on HBO in Game of Thrones you will also see in The Winds of Winter (though maybe not in quite the same ways)… but much of the rest will be quite different.”

This may very well come as a relief to fans who were upset at the lack of followthrough in many plot points in the last season of the television series. We can hope that there will be more explanation of the red comet, the Prince who was Promised, Cersei’s prophecy, more details of the Children of the Forest and their true relationship with the White Walkers, all the White Walker symbolism, etc. We expect to see Martin’s smart dialogues, which were missing from the latter seasons of the television program.

Martin also says that the characters that we followed through the end of Game of Thrones may not make it to the end of A Song of Ice and Fire.  Also, more new characters will continue to be introduced:

“One thing I can say, in general enough terms that I will not be spoiling anything:  not all of the characters who survived until the end of Game of Thrones will survive until the end of A Song of Ice & Fire, and not all of the characters who died on Game of Thrones will die in A Song of Ice & Fire. (Some will, sure. Of course. Maybe most. But definitely not all) ((Of course, I could change my mind again next week, with the next chapter I write. That’s gardening)). And the ending? You will need to wait until I get there. Some things will be the same. A lot will not.”

Hopefully, we will be able to read Martin’s vision soon enough in the relatively near future.
