Filming Of 'Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes' Has Officially Begun

Andy Serkis filming for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Cameras are rolling on Kingdom of the Planet of The Apes in Sydney’s historic Fox Studios Australia, recently renamed Disney Studios Australia. The latest entry in the Planet of the Apes franchise, known for its impressive motion capture work, will continue the story of a society of apes who have become self-aware by means of an engineered virus that also wipes out most of the human race.

Matt Reeves of The Batman fame directed the second and third installments of the most recent trilogy for 20th Century Fox to critical and box office success. Once Disney acquired Fox and rebranded it 20th Century Studios, they lost no time seeking another great talent to continue the legacy. Director Wes Ball, who helmed the Maze Runner films, is no stranger to post-apocalyptic settings, nor is his co-writer Josh Friedman, who created The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Snowpiercer, and Foundation. Also joining Ball and Friedman are Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa, who have writing credits for previous Planet of the Apes films. Most notably, they co-wrote Rupert Wyatt’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), which kicked off the most recent trilogy in the franchise. The entire team spent much of the pandemic in pre-production on Kingdom in anticipation of filming to begin in Australia this last week.

Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes is expected in cinemas in 2024.
