Sydney Sweeney, known for her role in Euphoria and more recently in The White Lotus, was cast in Sony's upcoming superhero film Madame Web last year, and it was recently revealed she will be playing in the Spider-Man spinoff.

The news comes from industry insider Jeff Sneider, who revealed on his podcast, The Hot Mic, that Sweeney will play Julia Carpenter, the second iteration of Spider-Woman in the comics. He also stated that her character will play an important role in Madame Web's plot.

Alongside Sweeney, this movie stars Dakota Johnson (Cassandra Webb), Adam Scott (Ben Parker), Emma Roberts (Mary Parker), Isabela Merced, Jill Hennessy, Tahar Rahim, Zosia Mamet, and Mike Epps. Although only a few roles have been revealed we know that Johnson and Sweeney will be sharing the spotlight as lead roles in this movie. In the comics, Julia Carpenter is known for becoming Madame Web after Cassandra Webb transfers her powers into Carpenter before dying from a mortal wound.

Additionally, the only significant information revealed by Sony was the synopsis of the movie: “the film will be an origin story of the clairvoyant [Madame Web], whose psychic abilities allow her to see within the spider world.” While it doesn't reveal much about the plot, it's interesting to know that this film will bring the Spider-Verse to live-action.

Madame Web is set to release on February 16, 2023.
