Empire magazine landed an exclusive interview with Ahsoka creator Dave Filoni. As with other Star Wars projects, balance is an issue. Filoni commented that his difficulty with the project is striking a balance between audiences who are familiar with the character from Star Wars Rebels and The Mandalorian and audiences who will be meeting this character for the first time.

Filoni commented on the struggle to satisfy all audiences, “She has one foot in the Star Wars that a lot of people know because of her connection to Anakin, and yet she’s all new and can go in her own direction, in her own way. I think that makes her an interesting bridge between what came before and what’s really possible.” To help with returning fans, Sabine Wren and Hera Syndulla will join Ahsoka on her new journey, although this journey will be filled with doubt. New audience members will have the character’s connection to Anakin Skywalker and the excitement of a new original story to pull them in. Although Filoni wants to please viewers, he is also concerned with one man’s opinion, the original Star Wars creator George Lucas.

Filoni describes this version of Ahsoka as a wanderer, someone disillusioned with her prior beliefs and community. Filoni explained, “She’s a wanderer at this point and is in a lot of ways wary of any organisation as such because of the power that comes with it as a group. She walks a path that basically died out a long time ago. And there aren’t many like her left, if any. So that’s a lonely thing. What is that life like? If you are a loner, you have a very small circle of friends. What is it like, then, when you try to open back up?”

It’s unclear if Ahsoka will be making use of her Jedi skills or trading in her lightsabers for a pair of blasters. However, it seems like Ahsoka won’t be a typical Star Wars journey. The Empire magazine with the full interview will go on sale this Thursday, June 8, and will be released in July. Ahsoka will premiere on Disney+ this August.
