In a world where Hollywood seems to be spitting out sequels and remakes, and making franchises non-stop, a very successful franchise from the 2000s has remained on the sidelines. Shrek, which had four movies from 2001- 2010, has not seen a single movie since the release of Shrek Forever After. Despite not reaching the levels of the three previous movies, it still landed $752 million worldwide.

The franchise has since seen two spinoffs starring Antonio Banderas’ character Puss in Boots, who was introduced in Shrek 2 in 2004. However, someone else thinks that another character is more deserving. "Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots. I mean, I love Puss in Boots, but he ain't funny as the Donkey," Eddie Murphy said, endorsing the character he played. Murphy also stated that he would love simply for the franchise to continue with a fifth movie.

Chris Meledandri, the founder of Illumination who now oversees the Shrek franchise, has commented on the possibility of a fifth movie:

“I find myself responding to my own nostalgic feelings of wanting to go back to those characterizations. The challenge for us has been to find something that really does feel like it’s not simply yet another film in a series of sequels.”

Donkey, who has been in all four movies in the main Shrek franchise, is often seen as a source of comic relief by fans. Mike Meyers, who plays the franchise's titular character, has also stated he would like to return for a fifth movie. The most recent Puss in Boots: The Last Wish grossed over $100 million domestically, showing the public is still interested in the franchise.
