Early Reviews Of ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ Present A Positive, Nostalgic Tone
The first reviews are coming for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and the reviews are mostly positive. The film is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, who helmed Teen Titans Go! To The Movies. Chris Pratt, from Guardians of the Galaxy fame, voices everyone’s favorite red-capped Brooklyn plumber, Mario, and Charlie Day from, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia voices his brother Luigi.
The two are transported suddenly to another world where they must defeat the warlord Bowser who is voiced by Jack Black and wants to take over the Mushroom Kingdom ruled by Princess Peach, performed by Anya Taylor-Joy. Luigi is captured by Bowser, leaving Mario to team up with Princess Peach to free his brother and to help save her kingdom.

Tom Jorgensen, IGN reviewer, said of the film, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a fireball of animated fantasy. Mario, Luigi, and Peach’s adventure delights with its infectious energy and smart implementations of video game call-backs, and the top-shelf animation renders the Mushroom Kingdom as an Oz-like wonderland that begs to be explored in the inevitable sequels that will follow.”
And the University Film Review tweeted, “The Super Mario Bros Movie does not disappoint! A fun & delightful time at the movies the whole family can enjoy…”
However, Brian Tallerico, who writes for Roger Ebert writes of the film, “With the nostalgia craze merging with the power of Nintendo and Illumination, The Super Mario Bros. Movie feels too big to fail.
That means we’ll get a sequel, and I expect another cycle of the debate of “critics vs. fans.” I am both. And I want a world where people who made films for a fan base as devoted as this one don’t take that fandom for granted…But we need creators who don’t just see these games as products to be referenced but as foundations on which new ideas can be built…”
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is in theatres today.
