Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson Talks About Henry Cavill's Exit As Superman After 'Black Adam'
Before the release of Black Adam, Dwayne Johnson touted the film as a game-changer for the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). With the introduction of the titular character, along with the Justice Society, and the return of Henry Cavill as Superman, this was supposed to be a seminal moment in the franchise. Instead, rather than being the next chapter, Black Adam would become a closing chapter after James Gunn and Peter Safran announced the reboot of the DC universe following The Flash.
At the Oscars, Dwayne Johnson opened up to Variety on how he felt following the cancellation of any future projects with his character, as well as Henry Cavill’s fate as the Man of Steel:
“All that I can do, and all that we could do when we were making Black Adam, was to put our best foot forward and surround ourselves with the best people and deliver the best movie we could. Our audience score was in the 90s. Critics took a couple shots, but that’s just the business of it…It’s almost like when you have a pro football team and your quarterback wins championships and your head coach wins championships and then a new owner comes in and says, ‘Not my coach, not my quarterback. I’m going to go with somebody new.’”
Currently sitting at a 39% critic score and an 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, Black Adam remains divisive among critics and audiences. Regardless of how audiences felt about the film, it still didn’t drum up enough of a box office to impress. This combined with the new plan for the DCEU inevitably led to any future endeavors being cancelled. Fans may get to see Black Adam and Superman face off in the future, but it’s unlikely that it will be Cavill and Johnson as how Johnson envisioned it.
