'Dune' And 'Doctor Strange' Writer Jon Spaihts Has Been Tasked With Writing The Netflix 'Gears Of War' Movie
Hollywood is once again looking to capitalize on successful video games. HBO Max’s The Last of Us has shown that an adaptation can do justice bringing the legendary game's story to life. Netflix is following suit with an adaptation of an equally legendary game series, Gears of War.
Work has begun on the movie, and Netflix has chosen Academy Award-nominated writer Jon Spaihts to pen the screenplay. Spaihts is known for his work on the Dune franchise, Prometheus, and Doctor Strange.
Netflix’s collaboration partner, The Coalition released a joint statement with Netflix about the project:
“We’re thrilled to partner with Jon and the Netflix team to bring Gears of War to life, …. Jon is a master storyteller with a talent for creating epic, science-fiction universes, and he truly loves Gears of War. We couldn’t ask for a better partner to honor our franchise and deliver an authentic story to our fans.”

Gears of War is a fan-favorite tactical third-person shooter where Marcus Fenix leads a ragtag fireteam in humanity’s last stand against total extermination by an alien race. Its gameplay and mechanics closely mirror that of actual combat, and players feel a sense of camaraderie while playing. The social commentary of a divided nation and the integration of science fiction elements, such as the Locust alien race, make it ripe for adaptation.
