Sir Michael Gambon has sadly passed away at the age of 82. Known for his sense of humour and on-set pranks, Gambon has been popular with colleagues over his sixty-year career, where he has worked with every great, including Marlon Brando and Al Pacino.

Gambon always felt that he was a thespian, first and foremost. He performed works by big-name playwrights such as Samuel Beckett, William Shakespeare and Harold Pinter, one of his most notable productions was with long-time friend Peter O’Toole in Hamlet, directed by Laurence Olivier. He was also one of the original members of the National Theatre, a vital organisation that supports grassroots theatre in the UK, as well as promoting the industry to the wider world.

RELATED:

Michael Gambon gained notoriety in television in the UK through The Borderers in the late 1960s and his career snowballed from there. Always down to earth, he once said of fame "I just hate the idea of being well known. I know that is almost impossible if you're an actor who has done okay, but I've always fought against it."

Gambon was often cast in adaptions of classics, whether it be Terrance Rattigan’s play The Browning Version or Gosford Park.  But Michael Gambon will probably be best remembered for the Harry Potter franchise. He took over the role of Dumbledore from Richard Harris when he passed away after filming Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets.

At a recent event, Daniel Radcliffe described the popular cast member’s relaxed attitude on set, and how he would be entertaining the nervous child actors right up until the call to action. ‘He knows he’s at his best when he’s at his most playful.”

Sir Michael Gambon was knighted in 1998 for services to the entertainment industry, but his accolades for his work are too numerous to list. He leaves behind his wife, Lady Gambon, and a son, Fergus.
