There’s a lot of action coming to the island of Númenor in the second season of The Rings of Power. Revealed by Den of Geek during their tour of the sets of that second season, which included the royal court of Númenor. A place where power struggles and betrayals will be seen. With the increasing civil strife in the kingdom, “the time of relative peace is over and things are shifting,” according to Cynthia Addai-Robinson, who portrays Queen Regent Míriel.

The throne room returns from season one, which will also play a part in the power struggle to come. This is a set that has come from New Zealand to the new shooting location in the UK and looks mostly the same as it did during that first season. Though with some small changes that introduce a bit more detail to it. Set decorator Tina Jones explains that “it’s more about finishes and texture” to make these sets feel grand.

Another set from Númenor is the Old Quarter of the city. Here, more exploration of Númenorean society takes place, providing a closer look at that civil strife. Showrunners Patrick McKay and JD Payne say that they’re “going into the [ideology] of the faithful and starting to set up [the question], what does their faith mean to them? And, you know, what did Old Númenor mean to these people?”

The two sides of the drama set to unfold are nicely summed up by Trystan Gravelle, who portrays Chancellor Pharazôn. Gravelle has been researching political theory by reading up on leaders such as Henry Kissinger and Charles de Gaulle, among other things, to help inform how his character reacts to the events to come.

In this time, there were “people who lived inside walls, and then the so-called barbarians on the outside. And there’s definitely a difference of perspective and how they see the world. So when you build these walls, your reputation inside those counts for nothing in the outside world. And so it's up to you to build that again. And there comes a fear, I think, and there’s a lot to lose. And so the height that you fall from is greater.”

All this political drama and more is soon to come when The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season two premieres August 29 on Amazon Prime Video.
