A New Petition Wants Ubisoft To Cancel The Release Of 'Assassins Creed Shadows'
The latest Assassin’s Creed game, Shadows has received backlash from the fans, and it’s not even out yet.
Set in Feudal Japan, Shadows follows the tale of Yasuke, a black samurai, and the first playable character in an Assassin’s Creed game. Criticism stems from players feeling that the game is being historically inaccurate. So far a petition has been created, asking Ubisoft to cancel the game. At the time of writing, it has over fifty thousand signatures.
Indeed, the games have always played fast and loose with history. It’s part of the overall charm to be assassinating Templars while meeting characters like Leonardo Da Vinci and George Washington.
In different games. They don’t play that loose with history.

Regardless, Yasuke is a documented historical figure, as is his relationship with the powerful warrior and government official Oda Nobunaga. Nobuganga did give Yasuke a sword and was fascinated by his skin color, but there is little to no historical evidence that Yasuke was ever a samurai. Another character, a shinobi named Naoe, is entirely fictional (though her father in the game was a real person) and thus seems to be receiving no backlash.
Interestingly, this is the first time we’ve played as a real figure, given how many games there are. Historical accuracy has never been the strong suit of the series (for example, in one mission in ACIII you assassinate the American banker Nicholas Biddle on a ship, despite that not even being close to when and how he died in real life) so the fact that some players care now is interesting. Regardless of motivation, Ubisoft does not seem to care.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is scheduled for launch on November 15th, 2024.
