The Original 'Avengers' Cast Have Reunited To Dub The Film In The Lakota Language
In the original Avengers film, a big part of the on-screen magic comes from the actors bringing their respective roles to life. The six movie stars who made us fall in love with the team in the first place - Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, and Robert Downey Jr. recently assembled to dub the movie in the Lakota language. In a video released on YouTube, Mark Ruffalo says, “This project came out of my relationship with the Lakota people. I'd been hearing about the work they've been doing to revitalize the language. There's not a lot of people left who speak it.” It is shared in this video that the language was once banned from being spoken.
Chuck Archambault, a Lakota advisor said, “Our idea is to put the language back in the homes of our people — to be able to have them bond in such a way where they're having fun watching a movie, and be totally integrated with the language of our people.” The video shows snippets of the cast delivering their lines in the recording studio and their enthusiasm when they get the pronunciation right. Ruffalo discusses the challenges in nailing the pronunciation, noting that “Everyone really was into it. It’s a daunting language: There are sounds that we just don’t have in our language that they have in theirs. But once you start to get there, it feels really good.”
It took more than 15 months, 62 Lakota-Dakota language speakers, and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to bring the project to fruition. Check out the video below to see Mark Ruffalo and other team members share more about the project.
