Disney+ has announced that it will be releasing live-streaming playlists for its premium subscribers. The soft launch started earlier this month with the first two channels. The “ABC News Live” channel included live coverage of the U.S. Presidential Debate on September 10, 2024. Disney Junior characters and stories focused on preschool offerings are also now available around the clock for the youngest Disney+ viewers.

Four additional playlists will build on this initial soft launch later this fall, including a collection called “Hits and Heroes” with movies and shows from the Star Wars franchise, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and other epic adventure stories. There will also be seasonal content, which would start as “Hallowstream” and then presumably change to holiday celebrations come December. Two other channels will feature nostalgic Disney Channel favorites (“Throwbacks”) as well as documentaries and biopics (“Real Life”).

This decision was made public alongside the news that other Disney-owned platforms were being shut down: ABC, DisneyNOW, Freeform, FXNow, and Nat Geo TV. The content from these sites will be migrated to the Disney+ library starting September 23, 2024. Currently, fans with a cable package have been able to log in to these services via their cable provider, but after September 23, everyone wanting access will need to subscribe to Disney+.

Continuous programming on a streaming platform like Disney+ aims to boost the length of time users will be engaging and interacting with the content every time they open the app. Disney+ will refresh the content of each playlist each month with a new lineup based on seasonality and viewer input.
