With the large slate of Disney live-action remakes, it’s only natural that eventually they’d get to Lilo and Stitch. While the original film didn’t instantly become part of Disney’s pantheon of classics, it did well both critically and at the box office, and has its legions of devoted fans. As such, it wasn’t if the film would get a live-action remake, but rather when. The film was originally going to be given a direct to Disney+ release, but as of August 2024, it has switched to a 2025 theatrical release.

As we approach the summer release, we’re finally starting to get glimpses of the film. We’ve had a cast list for a while, which includes names such as Zach Galifianakis, Courtney B. Vance, Jason Scott Lee, and Chris Sanders, who was the original voice of Stitch. However, the biggest reveal is the live-action Stitch himself.

It’s obvious that the movie would live or die by how good Stitch looked. If he was “first draft live-action Sonic” bad, that would be a major ding on the film. However, he looks as good as he can, so it’ll be interesting to see how well he works in the film itself, especially when it comes to interaction with real people.

The recent slate of live-action Disney remakes has left a lot to be desired. They’ve been marred by critical and box office failures. Given the dedicated fan base for Lilo and Stitch, and the fact that they’ve created what looks like a good Stitch, things are starting on a hopeful note.
