Guess it’s not a good week to be a Disney+ sports-themed scripted series. The streamer has canceled the Lauren Graham-led The Mighty Ducks franchise expansion The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers and the John Stamos-led Big Shot, each after two seasons.

The second season of The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, which also starred Brady Noon, Maxwell Simkins, Swayam Bhatia, Luke Islam, Taegen Burns and De’Jon Watts as the Ducks, saw the team with their freshly reclaimed name attend a summer hockey institute in California run by Colin Cole, played by Josh Duhamel. Josh Goldsmith and Cathy Yuspa were the showrunners and some of the executive producers with Graham. The season’s episodes were released weekly from September to November 2022.

Big Shot was created by David E. Kelley, Brad Garrett, and Dean Lorey, the latter of whom served as showrunner. It centered on basketball coach Marvyn Korn, who is ousted from his position as head coach for an NCAA team. He is given a chance at redemption at Westbrook, an elite private all-girls high school. The series also starred Jessalyn Gilsig, Yvette Nicole Brown, Sophia Mitri Schloss, Nell Verlaque, Tiana Le, Tisha Custodio, and Cricket Wampler. Unlike Game Changers, its second season was released all at once, on October 12, 2022, after its first season was released weekly from April to June 2021.

While Game Changers was more positively received, both still fell. Why? Apparently, it didn’t grab big enough audiences in its first seasons, but longtime Disney TV executive Peter Rice loved it enough to renew it. despite how little financial sense it made. They did not merit such renewals in the eyes of many others in the company. It was decisions like these that led to his firing in June. Once he was out there was no one left at the company to support either show anymore.
