In a surprising development, The Hollywood Reporter confirms Destin Daniel Cretton stepped away from the director’s chair for Marvel Studio’s Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Sources report the relationship between the studio and Cretton remains good, as Cretton is slated to direct Marvel’s Disney+ series Wonder Man along with the upcoming sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania writer Jeff Loveness did write a draft of the script of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty; however, with the change in directors, Loveness’s future on the project seems unclear.

Cretton co-created the Wonder Man series with Andrew Guest, the showrunner. Cretton will direct the first two episodes of Wonder Man and serve as the executive producer. Shooting for the project resumed since the multiple strikes in Hollywood ended. Wonder Man will be the first production under the Marvel Spotlight banner, delineating a particular series that will not be considered canon to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The ever-changing release schedule for Marvel Studios projects played a role in Cretton’s exit, per the Hollywood Reporter.

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is set for release on May 1, 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars, which will land next year.  At this time, there is no director attached to either film.
