As of late, it has been near impossible to find a corner of the internet that is not abuzz about Brendan Fraser. Since his return to film, fans have swarmed to support the actor. His latest film, The Whale, has earned him early award-season buzz, leading to the best actor nomination for The Golden Globes for which he has announced that he will not attend.

Starting with two current HBO Max series, a guest appearance on Titans and a starring role in Doom Patrol, the last few years have been dubbed a “Brenaissance” as the actor continues to gain momentum in his triumphant return. As award season heats up in Hollywood, the announcement that Brendan Fraser is nominated for Best Actor at The Golden Globes was sure to elicit excitement from fans everywhere.

This excitement, while welcomed by Fraser, was not shared. Following the nomination, he commented,

“I have more history with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association than I have respect for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. No, I will not participate… It’s because of the history that I have with them. And my mother didn’t raise a hypocrite. You can call me a lot of things but not that.”

People who have not followed Fraser’s story may see this as a shock, but people who have are probably not surprised. Fraser has accused the former president of the H.F.P.A., the organization in charge of the Golden Globes, of groping and assaulting him in 2003. This allegation, accompanied by the toll of his stuntwork that led to many bodily issues, has led to a general disdain of Fraser towards Hollywood and those behind the scenes.

While Fraser holds a grudge against the H.F.P.A, it is yet to be seen whether or not he will attend the Oscars if not nominated. As The Whale gains traction as an Oscar-worthy film, it will be interesting to see if Fraser clinches the Best Actor nomination at either of the film awards. If fans want to judge for themselves, they can find The Whale currently playing in select theaters.
