The untimely passing of Kevin Conroy came as a shock in the nerd community. The man who defined Batman for many generations suddenly passed, leaving fans to grieve. In a touching tribute, DC dedicated a page to Conroy in every DC comic released this week.

The tribute showed a black and white image of the Batman: The Animated Series version of the caped crusader, along with a quote from Paul Dini and Alan Burnett. Dini is famously the co-creator of Batman: The Animated Series, and Burnett has had a hand in almost every DC animated project. It is no surprise that they were chosen, as they had worked with Conroy more than most.

Their tributes read:

“As Batman, Kevin Conroy’s voice spoke from a heart no stranger to pain. Through his empathy, Kevin’s Dark Knight gave hope to anyone in need of a hero. He leaves behind a silent Gotham, but one infinitely blessed by his presence.” -Paul Dini

“His was a voice of uncommon power and warmth, and he made Batman a joy, not only for those of us lucky enough to work with him, but for the thousands of fans he met and thrilled every year. It’s an empty cave without you, my friend.” -Alan Burnett

Conroy left an unmistakable mark on the character of Batman. Lending the definitive voice of a generation, and bringing with it the pain and joy he had experienced in his own life. Conroy wrote a piece in DC’s Pride 2022 issue about his own struggles with the hardships of his early life and his sexuality. Kevin Conroy will forever be missed, but never forget that he was the vengeance, he was the night, he was Batman.
