Ron Howard Says 'Solo 2' Not A Priority At Lucasfilm, That Fans Are Driving The Conversation
2018's Solo: A Star Wars Story had a lasting impact on the future of cinematic Star Wars. Future "spin-off movies" for Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi were scrapped (but would later reemerged as television shows for Disney+). To this day, Lucasfilm seems to lack a clear strategy on how to continue with new Star Wars feature films.
Solo was troubled nearly from the beginning. Phil Lord and Christoper Miller were originally supposed to direct the movie. Then, the duo was fired due to "creative differences" after big parts of the movie had already been shot and most of the budget was spent. Veteran director Ron Howard took over and finished the film after massive reshoots.

While Solo received largely positive reviews from both critics and the audience, it was the first Star Wars movie to lose money at the box office, with a worldwide gross of $392 Million (and a production budget of $275-300 Million.). This number pales in comparison to Rogue One’s $1 billion earnings two years earlier. This ultimately made Lucasfilm rethink its plans for cinematic Star Wars.
Still, fans haven't stopped asking for a sequel. The hashtag #MakeSolo2Happen is still popular. In fact, there have been reports that Alden Ehrenreich's contract with Lucasfilm does include three movies.
But now Ron Howard pours some cold water on the hopes for future adventures of a young(er) Han Solo:
“The only discussion that I’m aware of about a sequel for Solo is coming from the fans at this point. I don’t think it’s a Lucasfilm priority, as I understand it.”
Of course, Howard's statement does not rule out that a future Solo sequel in some shape or form. Lucasfilm could still move on with such a project without his involvement. However, the director does have some serious ties to the Star Wars company, so his words do have some weight.
He also does not rule out a sequel completely as he continues on a higher note:
“But there’s some great characters launched, and the folks from Lucasfilm love the fans and really do listen, so I would never say never – but I’m not aware of any concrete plans right now to extend the story or deal with that particular set of characters.”
In fact, Lucasfilm is listening. The story of Qi'ra and her crime syndicate Crimson Dawn has been expanded in comic form in recent months. There is also a 10-issue comic book storyline called Han Solo and Chewbacca that takes place between 8 and 2 years BBY.
Nearly two years ago, Lucasfilm announced plans for a television show about Lando Calrissian, presumably with Donald Glover as the lead, although it is not clear if this project is still being pursued.
But all this might not be what fans had in mind with #MakeSolo2Happen.
