It’s the year of contract renewals for Hollywood and the major unions.  Most recently, the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) have been neck-deep in negotiations.  SAG-AFTRA’s contract was meant to expire on June 30 at 11:59 PM; however, in an interesting move, both sides agreed to a deadline extension of July 12.

Extending the deadline means extending the initial negotiations.  Some of the goals for these negotiations overlap with the other unions currently negotiating new contracts.  SAG-AFTRA is looking to regulate AI products in a way that protects their members, improves wages and residuals, and protects the union’s benefits like healthcare and pension, among other things.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the union sent a letter to its members.  In this letter, the union said, "No one should mistake this extension for weakness. We see you. We hear you. We are you."  This seems to be an attempt at abating fear over too fast, unsatisfactory negotiations; whether it works or not remains to be seen.

The members of SAG-AFTRA authorized the strike early on in a nearly 98% vote, meaning the union entered negotiations with hefty weight on their side.  Should they go on strike after July 12, they will be joining the Writers Guild of America.  The WGA went on strike on May 2 after negotiations failed to reach an agreeable resolution with the AMPTP.  If both unions are on strike at the same time, the industry as a whole would be further stalled.
