Colin Farrell is looking to return to the DC universe, this time playing a good guy.  After gaining much acclaim and winning the SAG award and Golden Globe for his portrayal of the villainous Penguin, Farrell is in talks to play Sgt. Rock, an Easy Company infantryman fighting Nazis in World War II.  Luca Guadagnino is set to direct the action movie which is based on the character Sgt. Franklin John Rock from the 1959 comic “Our Army at War”, created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert.

This fearless soldier was able to bring down German planes with a single submachine gun and throw grenades with deadly accuracy.  Sgt. Rock was given his own comic book run from 1977 to 1988, but was never brought to the screen:  Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis were in talks in the past to bring Sgt. Rock to life, and, more recently, Daniel Craig was also looking into this title role until he became interested in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Narnia series.

Although Farrell has been in the DC universe before, there isn’t a chance of an overlap:  Matt Reeves is in charge of the Batman/Penguin corner, while James Gunn and Peter Safran run the Sgt. Rock world.  Joining up with Guadagnino from previous projects Challengers and Queer is scriptwriter Justin Kuritzkes.  If all goes well and a deal is made with Farrell, shooting could begin this summer, who will also be busy with the second season of Apple TV+’s Sugar and the Edward Berger movie, The Ballad of a Small Player.
