Mario is bringing in the coins at the box office during the opening weekend of Illumination and Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Although critics have disparaged the film with a 54% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, their negative reviews haven’t stopped families from flocking to theaters to see the film. It has raked in over 200 million on its opening week, a record for Universal Studios.

The film’s official synopsis reads, “While working underground to fix a water main, Brooklyn plumbers Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) are transported down a mysterious pipe and wander into a magical new world. but when the brothers are separated, Mario embarks on an epic quest to find Luigi.

The movie opened on Wednesday to coincide with the long weekend and found success with $31.7 million at the box office. As families take advantage of the long weekend, the movie is expected to bring in $141 million after a five day run.

Perhaps the film’s success comes from starring a mascot that both parents and their children grew up with. If the movie continues this track, it could become one of the earliest blockbusters of the year putting it in the company of such hits as Avatar: The Way of Water, Avengers: Endgame, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
