Nintendo Has Announced That A New Animated Film Based On The World Of 'Super Mario Bros' Is Coming In 2026

Mario Day has once again come to pass, and with it came some exciting news. The next installment to the animated Super Mario Bros. film universe has officially been confirmed! Mario creator and gaming icon Shigeru Miyamoto described the project as “a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario.” Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri confirmed that, at this time, the film is slated to release on April 3, 2026, in most markets, “with a few select territories releasing throughout the month of April.” He also said that the storyboarding process has already begun.

Specific plot details for the film have not been released yet. There is potential for a direct sequel following the events of The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023), but that isn’t the guaranteed route Nintendo and Illumination will be taking; although the film’s post-credit scene sets up the potential for a related adventure, both Miyamoto and Meledandri are careful in their wording, generally avoiding the label of sequel or any related words. The world of Mario is extremely expansive, so the options for where to take the plot are plentiful. As development continues and the plot is settled on, details will likely begin to follow.
