The 2008 hit Cloverfield has seen expansions in its universe (mainly 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield Paradox), but the original found footage film has yet to see a direct sequel.

Now that’s going to change, with Under the Shadow’s Babak Anvari signed on to direct a new Cloverfield sequel from a screenplay by iBoy writer Joe Barton.

RELATED:

Not too much is known about the film at this point, but Dan Trachtenberg, the director of 10 Cloverfield Lane, has said that the sequel won’t tie into his film, but will be “very cool.” In an interview with CinemaBlend, he was asked if there were talks about a sequel to his film, and he replied:

“Not really. The sequel is to the original Cloverfield. But for our film, I would still totally be open to it. I think (10 Cloverfield Lane star Mary Elizabeth Winstead) would. … We talked a little bit in like ‘what if’ scenarios. And then I was pulled, all the filmmakers were sort of pulled into other things. But I would still consider it. There’s a lot that would be in the genre that that would be in, but you never know. The sequel they’re making is very cool.

So there. We’re getting a sequel to Cloverfield, and it’s going to be very cool, and it will not be found footage. That will admittedly put it behind the eight ball when making it feel like the true sequel to Cloverfield that we never got, but we’ll just have to wait for more information to come out to make more judgements.
