In a few short days, Disney Plus will release the third and final season of one of the MCU’s most creative series What If…? Brad Winderbaum, head of Marvel Television and Animation, sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss the series’ ending and plenty of beginnings for Marvel's 2025 Disney Plus season. Winderbaum couldn't go into detail about the end of the series but promised the decision would make sense after the next few movies and projects are released.

The third season includes an episode focused on Bucky Barnes and Alexei, which pairs well with the upcoming Thunderbolts film. However, Wundrbaum revealed that it was originally intended as part of season 2, so the timing was completely unintentional. He explained, “Obviously, Sebastian Stan’s depiction as Bucky is one of the most iconic characters in the MCU, and I love David Harbour. The way he’s embodied Red Guardian is just so entertaining. He’s so charismatic, and he just jumps off the screen, so seeing those characters together just felt like a natural fit.”

When asked about next year’s lineup, Winderbaum described Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man as “a fun ride,” Daredevil: Born Again as a “very grounded street-level violent story with a lot to say about the world we live in,” and Eyes of Wakanda as “a story about conquest and national identity.” He continued, “Marvel Zombies is this sprawling adventure story that uses the whole world as its backdrop. Every one of these shows has a different tone and a different type of story in a different genre. And just like the comics, it speaks to the breadth of the Marvel brand.” The interview concluded with WInderbaum teasing that Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel will have an important role to play in the MCU. The final season of What If…? premieres on Disney Plus on December 22.
