James Gunn Talks About 'Superman'
In anticipation of the almost here first trailer for Superman, a June interview with director James Gunn was just released. Gunn felt very overwhelmed working on both Superman and Creature Commandos, telling reporters that he was “just giving up everything in my life and soul, literally.” The DC Studios co-CEO is writing and directing the new Superman reboot, which stars David Corenswet (Superman/Clark Kent) and Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane) and will be released in theaters next July.
At the beginning of the new film, Superman and Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) don’t have an established rivalry, but it is just beginning to come to the foreground. Superman is already one of the existing superheroes of Metropolis in this reboot, which also features Justice League members Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi) - who has a significant role in the movie’s plot. Gunn has said that there wasn’t any particular reason for which DC characters he included beyond his own personal preference. In contrast, much of the focus is on the relationship between Clark and Lois, which allows the chemistry between Corenswet and Brosnahan to soar.

Superman is also not going to focus on Superman’s origin story. Gunn has mentioned that the classic tale of the first superhero has almost been overdone, so he didn’t want to just repeat plots of past movies. The new DCU’s cinematic approach includes seeking inspiration from 1978’s Superman, Man of Steel, the graphic novel All-Star Superman, and also letting the stars tell the story.
Gunn was asked about how Superman is different from the other DC films he’s worked on, like Guardians of the Galaxy and Suicide Squad. He explained that the Guardians of the Galaxy movies are known for their soundtracks, and while Superman will have a few songs, they won’t become an iconic element for the movie. Both the Guardians and Suicide Squad films are filled with humorous dialogue and comedic timing, something that Superman won’t rely on in every moment.
The new DC Studios television adaptations kicked off with The Penguin and Creature Commandos this year and will continue with the second season of Peacemaker next year. Superman will be the first movie released by DC Studios, flying to theaters on July 11, 2025.
