A new trailer for BlackBerry has been released. This biopic tells the “true story of the meteoric rise and catastrophic demise of the world’s first smartphone.”
First shown at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival, BlackBerry is making its way to theatres on 12 May. Starring Jay Baruchel as the egghead innovator Mike Lazaridis and Glenn Howerton as the cut-throat businessman Jim Balsillie, the two mismatched entrepreneurs made history with their new mobile device. The film details the dramatic rise and chaotic collapse of one of the most successful tech and business ventures across its 121-minute runtime.

Director Matt Johnson’s third feature film takes a different approach than his previous films, but his trademark humour is still apparent throughout. Those previous films are The Dirties, a crime drama about getting revenge on bullies, and Operation Avalanche, a mystery drama about two CIA agents who uncover the conspiracy surrounding the moon landings. Johnson comes from Toronto, Canada. The film festivals and awards ceremonies have been part of Johnson’s success with his films. Another success story from Toronto comes from Taylor Swift, who recently showed her short film All Too Well at the Toronto Film Festival, announcing at the same time that she had signed on with Searchlight Pictures to make her feature-length directorial debut.
