Bear McCreary Wows Crowd With Theme From ‘The Rings Of Power’ At San Diego Comic-Con
Last week, before San Diego Comic-Con 2022 (SDCC), it was announced that acclaimed composer Bear McCreary will be composing music for the highly anticipated The Lord of the Rings prequel, The Rings of Power. While restless audiences will have to wait until the show’s reveal on September 2 to discover the entire score, McCreary wowed the awaiting audience at SDCC with the “Main Theme” from the expansive and expensive new series from Amazon Prime.
Before the panel, the celebrated composer took the stage in Hall H accompanied by an orchestra and a violinist and treated guests to the stirring theme, which featured taiko drums, a traditional Japanese drum with a long history in Japanese folklore, and was also used in warfare.

As an added bonus, McCreary stated during the panel that he is bringing in instruments not heard in the Lord of the Rings soundtrack composed by Howard Shore in tracks such as “Numenor’s Theme.” Numenor is the kingdom occupying a large island to the west of Middle-earth, one of the primary setting of The Rings of Power. Not to be outdone, the elves’ themes will feature epic vocals.
Amazon Music previously released two of McCreary’s pieces that will be featured in the series: “Galadriel,” and “Sauron.”
Also featured on the panel were showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, with executive producer Lindsey Weber, who explained that the show is set during the Second Age, thousands of years before the events of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. They were then joined by a collection of the show’s impressive cast, including Robert Aramayo, Benjamin Walker, Owain Arthur, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Nazanin Boniadi, Tyroe Muhafidin, Sara Zwangobani, Markella Kavenagh, Morfydd Clark, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Ema Horvath, Maxim Baldry, and Sophia Nomvete (who plays Disa, the first female dwarf depicted on-screen in the Tolkien universe). The panel was hosted by J.R.R Tolkien’s biggest fan, Stephen Colbert.
