A new teaser trailer for the highly-anticipated Barbie movie was recently released, debuting in the previews before Avatar: The Way of Water, and it pays perfect homage to a cinematic masterpiece from the 60s. The setup opens in a parody of , leading out with a smooth musical transition and short snippets from the actual movie.

The cast for the movie has quite the lineup, which we get a brief glimpse of towards the end of the teaser. Margot Robbie plays the titular character, alongside Ryan Gosling as Ken. Other members of the cast include Simu Liu, America Ferrera, and Will Ferrell, among many others.

The callback to such an impactful film as 2001: A Space Odyssey piques the interest over what impact this movie will have. Greta Gerwig has a successful track record with directorial and scriptwriter pursuits, including Little Women (2019) as of late. As Barbie is directed by Gerwig and co-written with Noah Baumbach, the setup leaves nothing to be desired.

This new live-action take on the franchise is a great opportunity for the origins of the doll to come back. The dolls were inspired by their creator’s daughter, who projected her dreams into her paper dolls’ lives. Barbie as a doll and character has a history of independent icon symbolism, which the movie seems to be properly leaning into, considering Robbie’s swimsuit look in the trailer is taken directly from the first Barbie doll design in 1959.

The overall plot has yet to be revealed beyond Robbie’s character being kicked out of their world due to imperfections and learning what lies beyond. Barbie rolls into theaters on July 21st, 2023, so start making plans to grab your friends and go party!  In the meantime, check out the trailer below.
