Unlikely combinations happen all the time. Doom and Animal Crossing, anyone? Well, this latest combination taking the world by storm is “Barbenheimer.” Two films, Barbie and Oppenheimer, were released on July 21. And both have seen record numbers at the box office on their opening weekend.

Barbie had a first day gross of $70.5 million, launching it straight to the number one spot of the domestic charts for the week. It held that spot throughout the weekend, with Saturday bringing in $47.8 million while Sunday raised $43.7 million to bring the opening weekend gross of Barbie to $162 million. That number allowed it to enter the top ten highest-grossing films of 2023 in three days.

The numbers for Oppenheimer might be smaller, but they still present a success story. First day numbers totaled $33 million, with Saturday raking in $26.2 million and Sunday $23.2 million to bring in an opening weekend gross of $82.5 million. While not a top-ten placer, it is worthwhile to note that it took John Wick Chapter 4, another R-rated film that currently sits in the top ten, five days to reach a similar number.

Both films brought a combined total of $244.5 million to the weekend box office total. Such a number already puts it at the highest gross for a weekend at the domestic box office in 2023, but adding all other films on the market during the weekend of July 21-23 to that number brings the overall total to $311.3 million. Putting that into perspective, the previous highest non-long weekend total was $205.1 million back in April, when The Super Mario Bros. Movie was released. That weekend of April 7-9 had 70 films on the market, while the weekend of July 21-23 only had 47.

“Barbenheimer” has certainly been a success for Hollywood, and those successes are likely to continue while both films remain on the market. And for a final win for this weekend, Barbie has claimed the record for best domestic opening weekend title for a film from a female filmmaker. The Greta Gerwig-directed film has taken the top spot from 2019’s Captain Marvel, co-directed by Anna Boden, which opened at $153.4 million.
