In the nearly 40 years since the classic 80’s film Back to the Future debuted in theaters, fans have had all manner of ways to enjoy and expand their love of the movie. Park rides, action figures, LEGO sets, and video games have all been made to add to fans’ collections and enjoyment. Now, this August, fans can soon find a new avenue to enjoy their favorite movie: Broadway.

Starting August 3, the classic movie will begin its Broadway-musical-adapted run, and to celebrate the occasion, a special performance was put on this past Tuesday. To honor the occasion, alumni from the movie, including Michael J. Fox, Lea Thompson, Christopher Lloyd, Donald Fullilove, Marc McClure, and even Steven Spielberg, were reunited for the event. Many of them wore gray ribbons in support of Parkinson’s awareness. After the performance, there was a special auction that the producer of the musical had hoped would raise a half million dollars.

The musical, which originally ran in Manchester in 2020, but due to the pandemic, it was cut short. It moved to the West End in 2021, and was written by the trilogy’s original writer, Bob Gale, and original composers, Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard, composed the music and lyrics. While they incorporated some of the movie’s iconic songs and rock’n’roll influence, they wrote nearly a dozen new songs for the musical. Gale explained that he would rather do this than make a fourth movie because the characters are his family.
