'Avatar The Way Of Water' Surpasses 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' To Become 4th Highest Grossing Movie Of All Time
Avatar: The Way of Water was released on December 16, 2022. In that small timeframe, it has surpassed all Marvel theatrical releases for that year in terms of revenue. The sequel continues to make waves. Its total revenue is now over $2.071 billion worldwide, making it the fourth highest-grossing film of all time. This knocks Star Wars: The Force Awakens down to spot number 5.
The original installment of Avatar, which was released in 2009, still holds the number 1 spot for worldwide revenue. Avatar: The Way of Water takes place 10 years later, following Jake Sully and his new family on Pandora. When a familiar threat arises, Sully and his family must branch out to work with other Na’vi in an effort to defend their home.

Many have been patiently waiting for this sequel as it came out 13 years after the first one. Reportedly, this is because director James Cameron wanted to solidify the plot of all future installments, making sure things were ready to go and consistently written. The audience can decide for themselves if they feel he has succeeded thus far, but these numbers have their implication.
Avatar: The Way of Water is likely nearing the tail-end of its theatrical run, but it is still being shown in many theaters. A Disney+ release date has not been announced yet. However, the film has surpassed Disney’s 45-day exclusive theatrical run minimum.
