Avatar: The Way of Water was always guaranteed to be a success based on how popular the first was when it was released in 2009. Now, figures for the opening weekend of the latest film of the franchise show just how much of a success it is likely to be.

Predicted to make $450 million, The Way of Water has fallen slightly short of it with $435 million across the 52 international markets it has opened at. Even if it failed to meet that prediction, the weekend total still puts it at number two of the best global movie openings. Had it managed to reach its predicted total, The Way of Water would have surpassed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness for the top spot, with it having made $442 million in its opening weekend.

The first Avatar is still the highest-grossing film in history, having made a total of over $3.5 billion across all markets during its run. Across its first five days, it had only pulled in $241 million, but numerous repeat viewings from fans and a lot of hype surrounding it produced the results James Cameron had expected of it. And he is hoping for big things again. With a reported budget of $400 million, Cameron has said that The Way of Water needs to be within the top five biggest films in history to break even.

A decade has passed after the events of Avatar, with the Na’vi having lived in peace since that time. But the threat of a returning enemy threatens war once again. Avatar: The Way of Water is out in theatres worldwide, with it viewable in 3D at select screens.
