After five long years, Netflix has finally released the first trailer for their live-action remake of the beloved animated Nickelodeon series, Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Let’s break down what we have here.

The trailer starts with a voiceover talking about time, with a shot of a comet in the sky, which has to be Sozin’s comet. It then cuts to a Fire Nation attack on what looks to be the Northern Air Temple. That could either be a flashback to Sozin’s genocide against the Airbenders, attempting to eliminate the next Avatar, or it could be the Fire Nation attack on the Northern Temple under the control of the Mechanist. It’s been revealed that Episode Seven is “The North”, so this is more likely.

Then there are shots of Aang’s (Gordon Cormier) bubble in the ice, with Sokka (Ian Ousley) and Katara (Kiawentiio) watching, a cut to the towering city of Omashu, and then a shot of Prince Zuko (Dallas Yiu) and his Uncle Iroh (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee). The voiceover, which could be Avatar Roku advising Aang, continues to talk about time and how confusing it is, cutting to Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim) in his throne room before cutting to a shot of Suki (Maria Zhang), leader of the Kyoshi Warriors, shown after. The trailer continues to show shots of Avatar Roku’s home island, Aang airbending and entering the Avatar state. There are shots of Princess Azula (Elizabeth Yu), Fire Lord Ozai’s Agni-Kai with Zuko, and a beautiful shot of Appa, Aang’s Sky Bison, zooming into the sky.

There’s nothing in this trailer that would leave an ATLA fan wanting. So many scenes from season one of the original series are easily identifiable, and it all ends with the symbols of the four nations, and then the title screen before the premiere date of February 22 ends the trailer.

It’s going to be a long three months.
