Like the 1980s movie, Hairspray, which transitioned from a movie to a Broadway musical, and then back to the big screen as a movie musical, the classic teen comedy hit, Mean Girls, is returning to theaters soon. This new movie will be a musical comedy adapted from the Broadway musical that was adapted from the original hit 2004 teen comedy starring Lindsey Lohan, Tina Fey, Tim Meadows, Amanda Seyfried, and Rachel McAdams. That film spawned two additional, albeit less noteworthy sequels and a Broadway musical.

This movie, as well as the original, deals with a new high school student, Cady Heron, running afoul of the Plastics, an A-List clique of high school girls when she falls for the ex-boyfriend of the alpha leader of the Plastics, Regina George. The new movie features mostly a new cast, although Saturday Night Live alums Tina Fey and Tim Meadows will reprise their roles from the 2004 film. Meadows has appeared in all of the Mean Girls films released so far as the beleaguered high school principal having to manage the chaos caused by the conflicts between Cady and Regina.

The movie was originally set to be a Paramount Plus streaming exclusive, but it was later decided that the movie would be theatrically released instead. Also, actress Tina Fey, who had a starring role in the original movie and will be in the update as well, was originally set to direct the film, however ultimately decided against it. The film is expected to be released in theaters on January 12, 2024. An official trailer has just been released and, as the Plastics like to say, “It’s so fetch!”
