While overall one of the lesser-known DC characters, Aquaman has always had his supporters. Often seen as the joke of the Justice League due to his rather limited skill set (can’t do much without water) there’s a perception that there’s not too much he can do to help.

In any case, things did turn around when it came to the DCEU films. Aquaman was given a new costume that stayed fairly recognizable while having some tweaks to make it look less.. dumb. It didn’t hurt that they got Jason “Khal Drogo” Momoa to play him. Suddenly Aquaman was actually kind of cool and made over a billion dollars at the box office, one of only two DC films to do that. The other is the 2019 Oscar winning Joker. While Aquaman did halfway decent with the critics, garnering a 65% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with an audience score of 73%, the general consensus is that the film was OK. The 1.3 billion dollar box office would guarantee a sequel.

James Wan’s sequel film Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was originally slated for a March 2023 release date. However, there has been a change to that date, with the new one coming out in December of that year instead. It’s unknown exactly why the film has been pushed back, but there isn’t going to be too much of a wait.

One thing we do have to tide us over for the next year is some concept art. Reddit user U/Slay_121 released a series of seven pictures detailing leaked concept art for the film. Now, as we all know, especially people who play video games, concept art and what makes it into the final product can very much be night and day. However, what we seem to be getting so far is an indication that the filmmakers have put a lot of effort into making this film a visual treat.
