After being off the air for eight years, the wacky characters of Aqua Teen Hunger Force are returning to television. The series began as a spin-off to Space Ghost Coast To Coast, focusing on the intelligent Frylock, the mouthy Master Shake, and the not-so-bright Meatwad. The Adult Swim series aired in 2000 and ran for eleven seasons until it was canceled in 2015.

Now, amid a surge of animated rebootsAqua Teen Hunger Force joins the fray with a 12th season. In addition, the series was approved for five new episodes. Series Creators Dave Willis and Matt Maiellero shared their excitement, “We are thrilled to be making more Aqua Teen Hunger Force episodes for a new generation of fans, building upon the most impressive collection of IP ever assembled. Success is optimal and leads to quality.”

In addition to the 12th season, Adult Swim is releasing the feature film Aqua Teen Forever Phantasm on HBO Max on February 8 and on the Adult Swim channel on March 12. The movie will focus on the main characters taking on the mega-corporation Amazin after a brief breakup and makeup. Willis and Maiellero, the film’s writers and directors, shared this humorous sentiment, “Congratulations! You waited just long enough for Aqua Teen Forever: Phantasm to be free on the service your parents pay for. I can’t wait for you to discover the project that everyone has been talking about, and by everyone, I mean our personal Twitter accounts. There is too much stuff to watch already. Breathe, and focus exclusively on Aqua Teen. Delete everything else.”

Other animated shows slated for a reboot include Phineas and Ferb, Powerpuff Girls, and Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends. As more companies focus on live-action and realistic animation, these revivals may spark a greater interest in the art form.
