As Amazon prepares to release the second season of The Rings of Power, the studio announced another new character will join the series: Cirdan the Shipwright. Although Cirdan was present in Peter Jackson’s trilogy of films, he was mostly in the background. Cidan is a large part of the First Age in Tolkien’s The Silmarillion and will probably play a substantial role as not only an expert craftsman but a wise elf during the Second Age in Amazon’s adaptation. Ben Daniels will take on the role of the master shipwright, receiving praise from showrunner J. D. Payne and co-showrunner Patrick McKay. Payne said, “He’s a classically trained British actor and brings a lot of wisdom and gravitas to the role.

McKay praised his humor and warmth and explained the casting decision, “We really fell in love with him in The Crown and wanted to work with him. The second season of The Rings of Power will deal with the fallout of the creation of the elven rings, one of which is given to Cirdan in Tolkien’s stories and will eventually come into Gandalf’s possession. The showrunners confirmed that Daniel’s Cirdan will be a mentor to the young Elrond played by Robert Aramayo. The Rings of Power Season 2 premieres on Prime Video on August 29, 2024. More details are expected to emerge at San Diego Comic-Con as the show is the focus of one of Prime Video’s key panels.
