'The Umbrella Academy' Spin-Off, 'The Sparrow Academy,' Is Reportedly No Longer In The Works At Netflix

The Umbrella Academy Season 4 airs next month, marking the end of its time on Netflix. This will be the end of The Umbrella Academy and a long-anticipated spin-off series is no longer in the works, either. Fans of The Umbrella Academy may have expected a quick turnaround with the original series coming to an end this year, but that’s no longer the case.
First airing in 2019, The Umbrella Academy is based on a series of comic books created and written by Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance and illustrated by Gabriel Bá. The spin-off, The Sparrow Academy, was supposed to continue the story of The Sparrows, the rivals to The Umbrella Academy that were featured in Season 3.

Steve Blackman, The Umbrella Academy showrunner, has been accused of “fostering a hostile workplace.” Despite a response from one of Blackman’s representatives denying any such allegations and calling them “completely absurd,” the experiences of former writers and supporting team members stand firm.
There have been reports of him firing a writer who came back after maternity leave as well as her writing partner. Several former staff members also noted that they felt that they were constantly under scrutiny during production; faced inappropriate commentary that they reported to be sexist, homophobic, and transphobic; worried that Blackman would take credit for their work; and many feared professional retaliation and exploitation.

Blackman had two other projects in the works at Netflix as part of an overall development deal. In 2022, it was announced that he would create a streaming adaptation of the Horizon video games (which started with 2017’s Horizon Zero Dawn) as well as a space sci-fi thriller series called Orbital. There has been some conflicting information about the futures of these two series, however rumor has it that they both have been halted in the development process, possibly getting the cut altogether.
Despite The Sparrow Academy not getting its moment of glory, be sure to catch the final season of The Umbrella Academy on Netflix on August 8.
