Andrew Garfield explained in a recent interview with GQ UK how filming the third Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: No Way Home, felt as though he was working on an experimental short film rather than a Hollywood blockbuster. He accredited the feel on set to his two co-stars, Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland. He delved further into this “beautiful” experience:

“I got to treat it like a short film about Spider-Man with buddies. The pressure was off me. It was all on Tom’s shoulders. Like, it’s his trilogy. And me and Tobey were there to provide support and have as good a time as possible, actually, and be as inventive, imaginative, and kind of dumb as possible.”

When Garfield was first presented with the idea of coming on board for the third Spider-Man film, he was hesitant as to how his rendition of the character would work with Maguire and Holland’s. The final product worked out beautifully, and Garfield attributed it to their camaraderie:

“You have three people who feel real ownership over this character. But it was really, like, brotherhood first, I think. And I think that comes through in what we shot.”

Audiences first saw Garfield don the web-headed hero’s costume in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man. The 2014 sequel was panned by critics and audiences. Therefore, the third film never made it out of development. Prior to receiving the script for Spider-Man: No Way Home, Garfield thought that his days as everyone’s favorite neighborhood Spider-Man were over:

“I don’t know if I had an expectation of doing more. I was very open to it being whatever it was meant to be. But there was an undone feeling. Like, What was this experience about? And how do I close that circle in my living room on my own?”

Will fans see Garfield as Spider-Man again in the near future? The actor told Variety that he is open to it as long as the role feels “right.”
