In talking about his directorial debut Ex Machina at IGN, Alex Garland also talked about the possibility of a sequel to 28 Weeks Later. Both 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later were box office hits, having a great following in horror film circles. Which inevitably led fans to want a third in the series.

“We’ve just started talking about it seriously,” Garland stated. “We’ve got an idea. Danny [Boyle] and [producer] Andrew [Macdonald] and I have been having quite serious conversations about it so it is a possibility. It’s complicated. There’s a whole bunch of reasons why it’s complicated, which are boring so I won’t go into, but there’s a possibility.”

Many fans seem to have accepted the name for the sequel would be 28 Years Later, but Garland has stated differently. After all, there’s something between weeks and years when talking about the passage of time that many fans seem to overlook. “It’s more likely to be 28 Months than 28 Years. 28 Years gives you one more place to go. 28 Decades is probably taking the piss.”

Garland also revealed that, as with 28 Weeks Later, there’s a higher chance he’ll be executive producing than writing the script. This little bit of info will have fuelled fan desire for this sequel. Whether those desires are answered is likely to be revealed 28 months later.
