The trailer has dropped for Blue Beetle, DC’s latest superhero movie, due to be released on 18th August 2023. The superhero has died or been rebooted several times in the graphic novels. It appears that DC has followed the template of the third beetle, Jaime (pronounced Hi-meh) Reyes for the movie incarnation.

The trailer has given us a few sneak peeks, showing the main villain, played by Oscar Winner Susan Sarandon. We also get a demonstration of the Blue Beetle’s powers and see how important the family unit will be to the central storyline. Interestingly, there appear to be nods to The Green Lantern in a rooftop scene. The two characters do pair up in the DC universe and DC is still working on Lanterns, with James Gunn and Peter Safran. It’s worth watching the Blue Beetle’s credits to check for extra scenes, just in case.

The trailer led to some controversy when one of the characters calls Batman a ‘fascist’.  The director has defended the script saying it was a moment of fun, but insulting DC’s most loved figures might be a mistake.

Blue Beetle has a mostly Latino cast that includes massive talents such as Harvey Guillén (What We Do In The Shadows) and Raoul Max Trujillo (Riddick). DC has always led the field (in comparison to Marvel and Star Wars) with representation in their projects and this is no different.
