OpenAI has had a turbulent week, beginning with CEO Sam Altman’s dramatic firing on 17th November. The rift between Altman and the board was reportedly over ideological differences in the rollout and development of the technology. Sam Altman’s no-holds-barred approach is to get ahead of the competition and get any new tech to market as quickly as possible. He was accused of not communicating with the board which took a more conservative tack, aware of the issues their product could create in certain industries.

Sam Altman’s dismissal did not go down well with the other employees at OpenAI, and 747 out of 770 signed a letter threatening to quit and join Microsoft (who had offered to hire the Open AI staff) if he was not reinstated.

On Tuesday 21st November, just four days after Sam Altman was given his marching orders, OpenAI was forced to rehire the CEO. Two members of the board of directors stepped down as a result of the decision, as well as an AI researcher Ilya Sutskever. Sutskever led a research project designed to prevent AI from developing to a point where it might cause harm to humanity.

Altman hasn’t been allowed to return to the board of directors, but recent events have shown that he has the support of the rest of the company and they back his ethos. We’ll likely see many new products coming from OpenAI and further advances in the boundaries of what artificial intelligence is capable of.
