Arkane Austin’s co-op vampire shooter Redfall was released at the beginning of the week but met a flurry of bad reviews from critics and players alike. The head of Xbox Phil Spencer joined the Kinda Funny Xcast to assume full responsibility for the poor reception. Spencer brought up the game’s high price tag of $70 and claimed that a game needs to be great at that price. At the same time, he was quick to defend the developers and said that he would not “push against the aspirations of our creative teams.”

Spencer expressed regrets that he disappointed the Xbox community, “I’m disappointed, I’m upset with myself. I kind of revisit our process. I think back to the announcement of 60 frames-per-second, then we weren’t shipping 60 frames-per-second, that was our punch in the chin - rightfully - a couple of weeks ago.”

The Xbox head also conveyed support for Arkane Austin, the company behind the game, “Their track record is awesome, I love a lot of the great games they’ve built. This is one where the team didn’t hit their own internal goals when it launched. I think it’s maybe a little simplistic to just say ‘Hey if you would have just delayed it three months the core creative of the game would have delivered on something that was different to what it was.”

Spencer confirmed that the Xbox, Bethesda, and Arkane Austin teams are still committed to working on the game with an initial goal of bringing the game up to 60 frames per second. Spencer referenced the teams’ continued work on Sea of Thieves and Grounded as proof of their commitment. From this interview, it appears the developers are committed to quality in the future and can use this disappointing launch as a lesson as they hone their developer skills.
