After A Bad Fan Encounter, Bill Hader Will No Longer Sign 'Star Wars' Merchandise
Star Wars is known for an often incredibly rabid fan-base, and definitely a wild ride for the actors who have participated in the franchise. Ahmed Best, who played Jar Jar Binks, despite getting a redemption in the latest season of The Mandalorian, was so hurt by the fans in the early days that he contemplated suicide. Kelly Marie Tran, who appeared in The Last Jedi, also talked about fan interactions that left her feeling less than loved. Well now actor and comedian Bill Hader talked about how he is so turned off from Star Wars fans that now he won’t sign merchandise from the franchise.
Hader, who appeared on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, said that he no longer signs merchandise from the series for fans following a rough interaction with a fan late one night. In his words, “I used to sign stuff, and then one time I saw somebody and they had their kid come up to me to sign a BB-8 thing and it was three in the morning.” Hader continued: “I was leaving the ‘Inside Out’ premiere and then we went to an after-party thing and it was super late and this guy kept his kid up all night. [He] was like, ‘Go over there so he’ll sign it so I can sell it online.’” This has led Hader to swear off signing anything now.

What adds to the strangeness of the situation is Hader was only brought in to consult on the voice work for the droid, who really only spoke in beeps and tones. We never actually hear Hader’s voice, or even that of Ben Schwartz, who also assisted in the work (and is also a fellow comedian).
Now we probably shouldn’t paint everyone with the same brush, and certainly I am sure Hader himself doesn’t think all fans of Star Wars think like that one, but definitely going forward, it’s wise to just “be cool” as fans. Maybe one day, Hader can make his way back into the fold.
