The DC Studios television show Lanterns will begin production in January 2025 and will air on Max, HBO’s streaming service. New casting announcements include Aaron Pierre (Krypton, Rebel Ridge) as one of the Green Lanterns, John Stewart, and Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights, Bloodline) as another Green Lantern, Hal Jordan. Lanterns will be written by Damon Lindelof and Tom King, with Ozark’s Chris Mundy as showrunner. The only director known at this point is James Hawes (Doctor Who, Enid) for the first two episodes.

Lanterns will see legendary Hal Jordan leading the rookie John Stewart as they investigate a murder mystery in a True Detective fashion. The Green Lanterns are like intergalactic police and will be working on this case in America’s heartland. There is certainly a possibility of other Lanterns making an appearance, like Nathan Fillion returning as Guy Gardner, but this has not been confirmed yet.

The new “unified DCU” launches on December 5, 2024, on Max with the animated series Creature Commandos. The live-action Superman will then be next, hitting theaters on July 11, 2025. DC Studios CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran have confirmed that they hope to release Lanterns in Summer 2025, presumably after Superman comes to the big screen.
