The Fallout series is known for a lot of things, scary creatures, memorable stories, and good music are just some of these things. However, one of the biggest parts of the series is the vaults. These are places in the ground that people went to for safety from nuclear weapons. In Fallout 3, your character starts in a vault. In Fallout 4, your character signs up to get into the local vault. There’s also the newest installment, Fallout 76. While these places were supposed to be safe, in the event of a nuclear fallout, instead, most doubled as a way to conduct messed up experiments. You can come across some of these weird and twisted vaults during your travels. Let’s look at some of the worst ones in the series.

5. Vault 22 – 'Fallout: New Vegas'

This is not your average vault as it was home to scientists instead of being inhabited by civilians. These scientists were working on a method to promote plant growth and sustainability while underground. A common mantis, a kind of Venus fly trap, and a fungus were all originally used in the study. However, it was eventually discovered that the spores were toxic to humans, and rapidly infected the vault’s population. Once the fungus kills the host, it then takes over the body and uses it to spread more spores. This caused a chain reaction that caused the vault dwellers to flee the often violent spore carriers. The vault was eventually abandoned, which allowed the other plants to flourish, and mutate into undead plant-fueled monsters, called Spore Crawlers. If the player chooses to visit, they will be greeted with a lovely “stay out” sign, and if they go in, they will have to face the horrors that await them.

This vault had elections, but not with the outcome we’re used to. The Dwellers were forced by the computer to elect an Overseer who would serve one term before being sacrificed. If they didn’t the entire vault would be sacrificed instead. Eventually voting blocs emerged, who would blackmail residents into doing their bidding. One victim, Katherine Stone, lost her husband to this. Even though she complied with the blocs, they elected her husband to be Overseer and eventually sacrificed. To get revenge, she killed members of the bloc and confessed to her crimes. When she became Overseer, she changed the entire voting system to random selection, which led to a bloody coup. This left five people alive, who eventually couldn’t take it, and well you can guess what happens next.

3. Vault 34 – 'Fallout: New Vegas'

This vault was intentionally overstocked with weapons and ammo. It also included several recreational spaces, but no real living spaces. After the first several decades, the vault eventually became overpopulated and the access to unrestricted weapons resulted in bouts of violence. The Overseer of the Vault eventually cut off access to the armory, which caused a small group to leave the Vault, and settle elsewhere.  As the years went by, the infrastructure began to decay, and radiation leakage became a serious problem. A reactor technician left the vault because he believed he was turning into a ghoul. He was not sick and the only one who could’ve stopped what happened next. The residents were trapped inside after a bomb blast caused the doors to automatically seal. Eventually, the residents slowly mutated into terrifying ghouls.

This vault was a sanctuary meant only for children and was located beneath a middle school. If an adult, such as a parent or a teacher somehow made their way into the vault, they were separated from the children by security, and executed. As it turns out, this wasn’t a sanctuary for children at all, instead its true purpose was the “refinement of human genetics”.  The children were tested to their physical and mental limits. The ones that were most physically fit and intelligent, would be harvested for their organs, once they turned 18. This was to ensure that future generations would have the best genes possible. Those who were deemed insufficient by vault standards would be executed upon reaching the age of 18, and their bodies would be incinerated. At some point, the vault was open, and the inhabitants left.

There was no hiding what occurred in this vault, as it was the site of forced medical experiments. The scientists would force the test subjects to undergo biological changes that would enable them to survive in a nuclear wasteland. They were locked in an airtight chamber, and exposed to the Forced Evolutionary Virus (FEV). Many people did not survive this experiment, but those who did increased in size and strength, and developed resistance to environmental damage, all at the cost of their mental well-being. This vault created one of the terrifying enemies you face throughout the games, the Super Mutants!

These vaults scratch the surface of some of the horrors that the vault dwellers faced. With so many scattered throughout the games, it’s impossible to know what happened in all of them. The ones we are aware of are places that no one would want to spend their life in.
