One Way Out: The Five Best Moments Of Sacrifice In 'Star Wars'
If there is one thing an audience loves in a Galactic Space Opera, it is moments of noble sacrifice. Star Wars delivers these in spades. Obi-Wan commits himself to the Force to allow Luke and the gang to escape. Luke gives up the last of his strength to save the Resistance. And, of course, Anakin Skywalker gives up his life to destroy the Emperor and redeem himself.
All big story moments, that rightly elicited cheers in The Skywalker Saga. However, it is worth noting, that there were others who have given up everything to protect the ones they love, make a noble sacrifice, or simply do what they believe is the right thing. They deserve remembered as the heroes they were.

5. IG-11
Starting with a mercenary assassin droid. Bold opener eh? IG-11 may have been introduced to us playing the role of ‘hunting down and killing Grogu’ in The Mandalorian, but by the end of series One, this noble robo-nurse droid makes the supreme sacrifice. He activates his self-destruct mechanism, and walks through a river of lava, to wipe out a platoon of Stormtroopers and allow our heroes to escape.
4. Rogue One
Overcoming the main downside of any sort of prequel in that, ‘you know the ending in advance’. We knew the crew of Rogue One wasn’t going to have a happy ending. However, seeing them cut down one by one, basically saving the galaxy by getting the Death Star plans to the Rebellion, was poignant and beautiful in equal measure.
3. Caleb Dume (Kanan Jarrus)
Arguably one of the few genuine surprises in modern-day Star Wars is the death of Caleb Dume. Dume had fully embraced his heritage and his love for Hera and knew there was no way to save everyone. So he displayed the truest and noblest of the Jedi traditions and sacrificed himself BUT for the woman he loved. Showing that not only was he a heroic Jedi, but a heroic man.
2. Ezra Bridger And Thrawn
I mean this ending was pretty nuts, and for that alone deserves a spot on this list. This scene had everything. Poignancy, character development, emotion, dramatic monologuing, and space whales. Plus now there is a chance we can see Ezra and Thrawn in a buddy comedy through time and space.
1. Kino Loy
This is a masterclass in acting, directing, storytelling, and heartbreak. You can not even begin to describe how perfect this character’s journey was over the course of a few episodes of Andor – and as always Andy Serkis is the GOAT. Just watch it.
Three simple words, and what is supposed to be a heroic triumph over evil, turn to ash in our mouths.
Congratulations Star Wars. I’m sad now.
